National Mall Gets Non-Profit Partner
Express

THE NATIONAL MALL, home to the city's monumental core and one of the most trafficked tourist destinations in the country, is in need of help. The area that stretches between the Capitol on the east and the Potomac River on the west is taking a pounding from the feet of the 25 million visitors who wear down its pathways each year.

As WTOP reports, the National Park Service is announcing a new public-private partnership, the Trust for the National Mall, to raise funds to improve the Mall and establish an endowment for its continued upkeep.

The need is evident. A seawall adjacent to the Jefferson Memorial is slowly sinking into the Tidal Basin, while cherry blossom trees that line the man-made body of water are under threat by thousands of feet that trample their roots. Elsewhere, monuments are deteriorating and paths are often worn down and muddy. Today's rain, no doubt, is making that worse.
